Hello. My name is Richard Weatherstone. In 2003 I founded Tactical Response LLC. Shortly before I started my company I became very aware that there was a lack of Police K9 Units in the area. I later found the reason was the cost to start and maintain such a unit(80-100K a year). Having a deep love of K9s and what they can do, I started to study and research what I would have to do to become a K9 handler and offer the services to the Police as well as to the public and other companies at affordable rates. After months of training with a highly respected outside company (K9ONE) I became a Certified Patrol Dog Handler (US Department of Defense Standards) in 2005. I am required to re certify every year. Therefore I train with my partner (Duke Von Hunter, certified K9) year-round in Advanced Obedience, Agility, Search & Rescue, Tracking, Narcotic Detection (marijuana, heroin, meth, cocaine) and Protection Work. The pride and pure enjoyment I get working with my K9 everyday made me work even harder at my tactics and education in the field of K9 work. I have made K9 training a part of my everyday life and I would go to all sorts of parks in Fairfield County to train and observe other K9s, owners and trainers. In doing so I have had many people day after day asking me questions about training and general K9 knowledge. I would see them from time to time and they would thank me for the advice and would tell me I should be a trainer. From there I researched K9 trainer certification. To my surprise in all 50 states there is NO requirement to be certified. Having a great thirst for K9 knowledge I enrolled in Animal Behavior College. Now I am a graduate of Animal Behavior College where I earned my certification as an ABC Certified K9 Trainer. Animal Behavior College (ABC) is approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education and is internationally recognized school. My year long commitment to this program including 21 weeks of hands on training has provided me with a formal education in K9 obedience training and understanding behavior and its motives. Now I use the two training method (civilian/military) to keep up with my training as well as training others. I work down at the Stamford Animal Shelter as a volunteer trainer for shelter dogs as much as I can. I must say I love this work. But sometimes it's sad to see what people can do to a dog. Sometimes all a dog needed was a little time, understanding and basic training to save his life. I have learned over the years that there are NO bad K9s, just bad owners.
From the time I started in 2003 I have always strive to stay current on K9 training tactics and philosophy. Therefore I continue to get certifications, joined and participate in a number of K9 association and attained K9 seminars.
